This general chart of Meares’ voyage shows the track of his vessel Iphigenia in 1788 and 1789 along the northwest coast and clearly shows the Strait of Juan de Fuca (labeled John de Fucas Straits), Nootka Sound, and further north, Prince William Sound, including Snug Corner Cove, where Meares and his crew spent the disastrous winter of 1788–1789. Most interestingly he shows with broken lines a circumnavigation of today’s Vancouver Island by Captain Robert Gray in the American sloop Lady Washington in 1789. Later, in 1792, when he met Captain George Vancouver, Gray denied making any such trip.
